The Whitharral Lady Panthers downed the visiting Morton Maidens 31-28 in high school girls’ basketball action.

Whitharral is playing a junior varsity schedule due to lack of numbers and injuries, so their season is officially considered a forfeit by the UIL.

Area coaches, however are willing to play to give both the Lady Panthers and the opposing teams some valuable experience.

Both teams struggled offensively.

Whitharral shot 32 percent from the floor, while Morton was only marginally better at 33 percent.

Rebounding hurt the Maidens. They had a total of 21 boards, two of which were offensive.

The Lady Panthers on the other hand had 38 rebounds with 16 coming on offense.

Whitharral’s Madi Chavez hit the first basket – a trey – with 4:17 left in the quarter.

After that, things heated up for the rest of the period, which ended with the Lady Panthers leading, 8-7.

The second quarter was still short on scoring.

Kayleigh Boggs hit a basket at the 5:16 mark to give the Maidens their only lead of the night, 9-8.

Whitharral went into the locker room holding on to a precarious 12-9 lead.

The Lady Panthers started the third period with an eight point run to take a 20-9 lead with 5:25 left in the frame..

The Maidens were able to close the gap to three points, but could never quite catch up after that. They trailed 22-16 at the end of three periods.

Chavez had 16 points, five rebounds and an assist to lead all scorers.

Tyler Parkinson had five points, nine rebounds and an assist.

Avery McCain and Trinity Coronado had four points each. McCain also had 10 rebounds while Coronado had four.

Kalyn Bates had two points, four boards and three assists.

Elizabeth Reyna had four rebounds and an assist.

Madyson Nickelson had a rebound.

Kayleigh Boggs led the Maidens with nine points and four rebounds.

Clarissa Holland and Mallory Alvarez had eight points each.

Holland had six rebounds and an assist, while Alvarez had a rebound.

Lali Navarette had two points and two rebounds. Chloe Enriquez had a free throw and four rebounds. Amberlyn Hernandez had a rebound and an assist.

The Lady Panthers are Cotton Center on Jan. 3 at 6:30 p.m. The Maidens will be in Seagraves for a non-district game on Dec. 30.

Whiteface The Whiteface Lady Lopes unloaded on the visiting Cotton Center Lady Elks 58-6 in UIL Region I, District 1A-7 action.

Allison Martha had 17 points and Tymmyah Olenga had 14. Emma Ayers had eight. Morgan Waggoner had six. Jaedyn Rector and Anais Soliz had four each. Arianna Soliz had three and Kylie Deavours had two.

The Lady Lopes will be in the Eula, N.M. tournament over the New Years’ weekend.

Ropes

The Ropes Lady Eagles went on the road to take a 47-10 win over the Lady Eagles from Seagraves in UIL Region I, District 5 high school girls’ basketball action.

Ropes led 7-4 at the end of the first period, but went on a 200 tear in the second quarter.

The third, saw another big run, ending with Ropes up 45-6.

The Lady Eagles will be in the Caprock Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ weekend.
