Roughettes give up eight home runs

The Forsan Lady Buffs used the long ball to their advantage in an 11-4 win over the Sundown Roughettes in a UIL Class 2A High School Softball Bi-District Playoff in Lamesa last Thursday.

Forsan had eight home runs for nine runs in the one and done matchup.

The Lady Buffs, as visitor, came up first and didn’t waste time as Emma Buske took a 2-2 pitch from Daniella Reyna over the wall in center field.

Forsan’s Lybertee Rodriguez lined out to left field, then K’Leigh Williams singled to left. K’Dynce Speck lined out to second base for two outs with a runner on first.

That brought Ary’anna Mealing to the plate. She fouled the first pitch for a strike, then took the next pitch over the wall in right field for two more runs.

Kelcy Zubiate lined out to second base for the final out of the half-inning with the Lady Buffs up 3-0. Camry Jourdan led off with a grounder to left field for a Roughette single, but that was all Sundown could get going in the second inning.

Emry Jourdan hit into a fielder’s choice at second base for the first out, but Camry Jourdan advanced to second base.

Reyna went down looking and Ashlyn Lara was out at first on a dropped third strike to end the inning with the Roughettes still trailing 3-0.

Forsan put two more runs up in the top of the second inning on a two out single from Rodriguez with runners on first and third that brought both runners home.

The Roughettes went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second and trailed 5-0. Another solo homer, this time from Maddie Roach, put the Lady Buffs up 6-0 in the top of the third.

Sundown finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning.

Ariel Hernandez reach on an error at first base and advanced to second on the same error.

Allic McCormick hit a strong single to right field that brought Hernandez home. McCormick, however, was caught in a rundown and tagged out.

Camry Jourdan lined out to center and Emry Jourdan walked. Reyna was the third out, caught at first on a dropped third strike.

Buske opened the fourth inning with another solo homer on an 0-2 pitch for a 7-1 lead. A two out triple from Speck created another scoring opportunity, but Mealing popped out to Ella McCormick at second base to end the inning.

The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless, but both teams’ bats came alive in the seventh Reyna walked Williams, then Speck tripled to bring Williams home.

Mealing grounded out, but Speck came home for a 9-1 Forsan lead. A homer to center from Zubiate followed by another homer from Roach made the score 11-1 before the Roughettes were able to get the final two outs.

The Roughettes put up a fight in the seventh. Araceli Ibarra took a walk, then went to third base on a ground out from Hernandez.

A single from Allie McCormick brought Ibarra home. McCormick took second on a ground out from Camry Jourdan, then scored off a single to right from Emry Jourdan while Camry Jourdan advanced to third on the throw.

Reyna took a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Ciena Jackson, loading the bases.

Ashlyn Lara was issued another walk, bringing Camry Jourdan home.

That cut the Forsan lead to 11-4 with only one out and the bases loaded, but that’s where the rally ended.

Ella McCormick went down swinging, then Ericka Posadas hit into a fielder’s choice, pitcher to catcher for force Emry Jourdan out at home.

Camry Jourdan had a run and a hit. Emry Jourdan had two hits and an RBI. Lara had an RBI. Ibarra had a run, as did Hernandez. Allie McCormick had a run, two hits and two RBIs.
