The Ropes Eagles downed the visiting Smyer Bobcats 8-7 with a walk off walk in the bottom of the seventh inning last Friday in UIL District 4-2A High School Baseball action.

The two teams’ hitters benefited from winds gusting to 40 miles per hour and changing from west to northwest making it difficult for outfielders to judge the ball.

Mason Marmolejo got the win for the Eagles. He allowed no hits and no runs over the last 1 1/ 3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

Kade Franklin started for the Eagles, going six innings with six runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.

Logan Delgado gave three innings of middle relief, allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts and a walk.

Kaden Price took the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings before reaching the mandatory UIL 110 pitch count. He allowed eight runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks.

Shawn Barret allowed no hits and no runs, but walked two in relief.

Smyer scored three runs in the first inning. Austin Martinez walked, followed by a strikeout from Colton Burris. Shawn Barrett hit a deep fly to center for an RBI triple on an error by Koby Sullivan.

Then Aiden Martinez cleared the bases with a home run to the 320 foot left field fence for a 3-0 Smyer lead.

That brought Caleb Clausen up for a double to left field. He advanced to third on a passed ball to Price, who went down swinging for the second out of the inning.

Ben Steele was the third out, going swinging in three pitches.

Marmolejo was the first batter up in the bottom of the first, hitting a fly to right, caught by Ryan Guttierrez.

Price then walked Branson Beck and struck out Hayden Torres for the second out. Beck took second on a wild pitch to Logan Delgado, then stole third.

A balk by Price on a 2-2 count brought Beck home. Delgado then went down swinging to end the inning with Smyer up 31.

The top of the second saw the Bobcats go down in order. Brodie Medart grounded out to Franklin whose throw beat him to first base.

Christian Hernandez went down swinging and Austin Martinez hit a popup that was caught by Marmolejo at short.

Ropes took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Braxxin Partington took a base after being hit by a pitch on an 0-2 count. Franklin hit a line drive to center for a single that advanced Partington to second.

Brady Bryan reached on an error by Gutierrez in right to load the bases with no outs.

Garrett Gilliam hit a hard grounder to Steele at first base, who tried to get Partington coming home, but overthrew Clausen. Partington scored and the bases were again loaded with no outs.

Price fanned Stetson Wims next for the first out of the inning, then Marmolejo singled to right field, scoring Franklin to tie the score at three and keep the bases loaded.

Beck struck out for the second out of the inning, then Price walked Torres, bringing Bryan home for the first Ropes lead of the game at 4-3.

A double to left from Delgado brought Marmolejo and Gilliam home and put Torres on third with two outs.

The Bobcats walked Partington intentionally, then Franklin hit to into a 6-3 to end the inning with Ropes up 6-3. Smyer wasn’t done by any means, though.

A one out single from Barrett put the Bobcats on the bases in the top of the third inning. Aiden Martinez hit a single and Barrett went to second base. Clausen hit an RBI double that brought Barrett home. That brought Price up who went down swinging, but not before Martinez and Clausen came home on errors.

Steele came up and hit a double, but Franklin was able to strike Medart out to get of the inning.

The score going into the bottom of the third inning was tied at six.

The Eagles made the score 76 in the bottom of the third inning on a double from Bryan followed by a one out single from Wims that brought Bryan home.

That is where the score stayed until the top of the sixth inning.

Delgado opened the inning on the mound for the Eagles and walked Price. Steele hit a solid grounder to right field that brought Price home and tied the score at seven each.

Medart struck out, Steele was caught attempting to steal third and Burris struck out to end the inning.

Price was on the mount in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was dangerously close to hitting the end of the pitch count.

He got Franklin on a grounder to second baseman Austin Martinez, but hit Bryan, the next batter, with a pitch.

He walked Gilliam before being pulled on the pitch count. Barrett took the mount with runners on first and second and one out.

He walked Wims and Marmolejo, bringing Bryan home as the winning run. Ropes’ Marmolejo had a run, a hit, two RBIs and walked once. Beck had a run and a walk. Torres had an RBI and a walk. Delgado had a hit, two RBIs and a walk.

Partington had a run, a hit and a walk. Franklin had a run and a hit. Bryan had three runs and a hit. Gilliam had a run, an RBI and a walk. Wims had a hit, an RBI and a walk.

For Smyer, Austin Martinez had a run, a hit and a walk. Barrett had two runs, a hit and a walk.

Aiden Martinez had two runs, two hits and two RBIs. Clausen had a run, two hits and an RBI. Price had a run and a walk. Steele had two hits and an RBI. Hernandez had a hit.

Ropes will host Tahoka on Friday at 11 a.m. Smyer will host Sunday on Saturday at 11 a.m.
