Levelland Police Chief Albert Garcia released the name of the victim in Saturday’s homicide investigation.

He identified the victim as Jill Atchison, of Levelland.

Garcia said officers responded to a residence in the 400 block of E. Jackson Street in Levelland Saturday in reference to a welfare check. He said when officers arrived, they observed a white male leaving the residence. Officers attempted to make contact but the man fled in a vehicle. He said this resulted in a short high-speed pursuit that ended in the 300 block of Pecan Street. The man was then identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Atchison.

After transporting the man to the Hockley County jail, an officer returned to the residence and discovered the victim inside the home. The Texas Rangers were contacted to assist the police department with the investigation, and in an interview with investigators, the suspect gave information regarding the death of the victim. As a result of that interview, the suspect, Jeremy Atchison, was charged with capital murder, Garcia said.

Garcia said investigators also contacted the District Attorney’s Office for the 286th Judicial District in reference to the charge. If convicted, capital murder carries a mandatory sentence of either life in prison or the death penalty. Jeremy Atchison is being held at the Hockley County Jail on a bond of $250,000 for the capital murder charge and a bond of $2,500 for the evading arrest charge.

Capt. Tammie McDonald with the Levelland Police Department confirmed Sunday morning that police are investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday night.

Capt. McDonald said police responded to a homicide in the 400 block of E. Jackson Saturday around 10:24 p.m.

She said one person is in custody, Jeremy Atchison, and is charged with capital murder and evading arrest. He is being held on a bond of $250,000 for the capital murder charge and a bond of $2,500 for the evading arrest charge. Police have not released the name of the victim.

This is a developing story and this page will be updated as more information is released.
