The Hockley County commissioners met today to accept the resignation of Irene Gumula, county clerk, and appoint Nicci Palermo to the position.

First, the commissioners voted to approve Gumula's resignation, to be effective at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 31.

Next, the commissioners took action to appoint Nicci Palermo to the position. County Judge Sharla Baldridge commented that though Palermo will still be on the ballot in November, no one else had expressed interest in being appointed to the position.

Palermo was declared the winner in the Republican primary election with 1,231 votes, unseating Gumula, who received 913 votes, and has been serving as county clerk for more than 37 years. Palermo is running unopposed in the general election.

Baldridge said Palermo's first day is set for Friday, June 1.
